Elective mutism or selective mutism is classified as one of social phobia or as specific anxiety disorder. It is also known as the expression of extreme shyness. It is very difficult to explain with biological etiologies. Rather family dynamic, psychosocial factor or individual characters contribute to the causative factors. And so psychotherapeutic approach or psychoanalytic play therapy was the major therapeutic tool and now behavioral modification and pharmacotherapy are the main tools to treat selective mutism. In this article, authors reviewed the journals and textbooks for the treatment of selective mutism to set the relationship between psychoanalytic play therapy and selective mutism.
